This exercise started from a quick still life sketch. Once the sketch was completed the drawing was photocopied at a high quality to retain the value. Line was then added with black acrylic.

For the first step in abstraction lines was used to replace curves.

The second abstraction was completed by replacing the gray value with white acrylic.

The third abstraction was to photocopy again and replace values with at least 2 different gray values, pure black, and white resulting in an image that has the essence of the original but has been altered into a new piece.

The challenges of this exercise are to not simply outline the sketch, but to utilize line to create a variation from the original, but not a copy. Additionally, when adding value back to the work, the goal is not to just re-create the original by adding value back from where it was removed, but to once again alter the original enough to still be able to see the original but in this new altered way.
